Center appoints PM’s officials Rajiv Topno, Brajendra Navneet to World Bank, WTO

Two senior members (PMOs) of the Prime Minister’s Office, Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers Rajiv Topno and Brajendra Navneet have been appointed to the World Bank and the World Trade Organization (WTO), respectively, the Center said on Thursday.

Rajiv Topno, who was the private secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been appointed Executive Director (ED) in Washington, D.C., and a senior adviser to the World Bank.

Acting Joint Secretary to the PMO, Brajendra Navneet has been appointed Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to the WTO in Geneva, Switzerland.

The government has approved five more appointments to foreign positions for three years, with the aim of strengthening the commercial connection between the ongoing novel coronavirus epidemics in the United States, China, the Philippines, Switzerland and Belgium.

Who is Rajiv Tapno?

Topno from Ranchi, Jharkhand is a 1996 batch Gujarat cadre IAS officer. He attended St. Thomas Boys School in Khidarpur and graduated from St. Xavier’s College in Calcutta with a degree in Political Science and Sociology.

In 1989, Tapno joined the Gujarat cadre as an assistant collector in Bhuruch and continued to work for the state government in various capacities at the district and state levels before taking over as Deputy Secretary to the PMO in 2009.

The 46-year-old was appointed Private Secretary to Prime Minister Modi on July 1, 2014. The new position of Senior Adviser to the ED, World Bank is under the Department of Economic Affairs.

Who is Brajendra Navnit?

A 1999 batch IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, he has a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He was in charge of the state government from 1999 to 2006 and was then a deputation to the central government.

The 45-year-old officer was a director at the PMO before being appointed joint secretary in a massive mid-level reshuffle in 2016 and was given an extension last year.

Navneet’s new post as India’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the WTO comes under the Ministry of Commerce.

Apart from Topno and Navneet, IAS officers Ravi Kota, Lekhan Thakkar, H.S. Atheli, Anwar Hussain Shaikh and N Ashok Kumar have also been appointed.
