The Yankees are the second in a series with top prospects
Damon Oppenheimer knew when Clark Schmidt’s staff was pitching for the University of South Carolina it was enough to take the right-hander with the 16th pick in the 2017 draft.
There were other things about Schmidt that made Oppenheimer realize that those hard times were waiting for Colts: Tommy John came into a professional game before surgery.
“Her makeup element was on top of it. When you take a guy [with that surgery] You better believe what you see, “said Oppenheimer, head of the Yankees’ amateur scouting department. “If a player doesn’t have that element … you’re going down a road with a very long process.”
Schmidt, 24, was invited to the Big League camp last season at three minor league levels – the Gulf Coast League (Rookie), Tampa in the singles and Trenton in the doubles.
Since she played 27 minor league games (25 starts) in 2018 and 2019, Schmidt was not as much hyped as die-hander Devi Garcia, who reached Scranton / Wilkes-Barre in the triple as a 20-year-old last season, 16 from the Dominican Republic After signing in 2015 as a year-old, he appeared in the Old and 65 minor league games (57 starts).
Some voices within the Yankees’ organization believed that Schmidt could probably become an arm that could help if the general season could be held at any time in the Big-League stage. Of course, this is not happening because of the coronavirus epidemic. While smaller league games may not be held this year, it remains to be seen what Smith’s development will mean.
However, multiple scouts at Spring Training believe Smith is ahead of Garcia in the Yankees ’pitching potential.

“Larger and more durable body,” a scout said Friday, compared to the foot-5, 133-pound Garcia, the foot-1, 200-pound Schmidt. “Their stuff is the same as the average.”
Another scout spread about Schmidt after the start of a spring training against the race in late February.
“It simply came to our notice then [second] Big-League play and it’s spring training, but when you can throw the ball back in the strike count, you’ll have a chance to be really good, “said Schmidt, who worked in two scoreless innings, allowing two hits, three outs and a walk. Did not issue. “You can see him as a protector.”
Whether the season is over or not, James Paxton and Masahiro Tanaka will be eligible for free company this coming winter which means there could be two openings in the Yankees rotation. Reaching the Triples without Schmidt’s minor league season and not jumping into the big leagues, he found himself in a situation similar to last spring’s training in 2021, but was more than a year old.
“It’s hard to say. He still doesn’t have much experience as a professional pitcher. When manager Aaron Boone was asked in late February how much work the Schmidt League needed to do before the majors jumped. “He is clearly ahead due to lack of experience. He has got endless things as well as fast moving raw materials. “
If a season descends from the ground, roosters will likely expand to 26 to 30. Pitchers have briefly taken spring training, teams will carry more weapons to avoid paying taxes at their start.
Could Schmidt be in the extra forces? If that doesn’t happen, it’s still a way to get more involved with the big leagues.
