FIH Integrity Unit supports Batra, IOA will not take action against Chief

The International Hockey Federation has backed Indian Olympic Association president Narendra Batra, who has been embroiled in a dispute with (IOA) vice-president Sudhanshu Mittal, adding that they would not take any action against the FIH chief.

Mittal claimed that there had been “grave violations” in the process that led to Batra being elected IOA president in December 2013. He further added that Batara was not eligible to vote for the IOA president or run for office. FIH

FIH Integrity Unit says no action will be taken against IOA chief Batra

“In keeping with the applicable FIH procedure, the complaint was forwarded to the Independent FIH Integrity Unit (FIU), which today decided that no action would be taken against FIH President Dr. Batra on this basis.” Owen Steele, chairman of the FIH Independent Integrity Unit, said in a statement.

“In fact, under the then FIH Act, there was no need to change his relationship with Hockey India after Dr Batra was elected FIH President in November 2011. So he did not violate the procedure or FIH rules,” he added.

On June 8, he wrote to FIH Disciplinary Commissioner Gordon Nurse, where he questioned Batra’s eligibility as FIH president. In his complaint to the nurse, Mittal referred to Article 2.2 of the FIH, which states that once elected President, he will retire within 30 days from any official position under any national or continental hockey organization.

Mittal also called on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) policy commission to ban Batra from “hockey and the Olympic movement”.

But Batra has denied any wrongdoing. He wrote letters to both FIH chief executive Thierry Well and IOC president Thomas Bach, denying Mittal’s allegations and saying the IOA vice-president was trying to tarnish his image and wanted to become IOA chief in 2021.
