Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar blamed outside parties for setting fires during nationwide protests over the death of George Floyd.
“In Minneapolis, we have marched, protested and organized. And when we see people setting up our buildings and burning down our businesses, we know that those people are not interested in saving black lives, “said Omar, who has Minneapolis and several surrounding towns in the congressional district. ABC News’ “This Week”
“They may say that they think about black life, but they are not interested in saving black life, because when you light a fire, you are at risk for the community you are risking.”
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has involved the National Guard on Saturday in an attempt to loot and burn businesses for the past few nights since Floyd’s death on Saturday.
Omar said “the population felt safe” because the presence of the National Guard would not burn down their homes and businesses – but the military response was somewhat shaken.
“There were really a lot of people who demonstrated curfew and did not comply, who also seemed to be horrified to see the presence of tanks in the presence of the National Guard and militarized police,” he said.
“What we are trying to do is try to find some way out of the extreme aggression and how to burn our city. And it’s a challenge. “
