Kate Garraway says Derek Draper now exercising in promising health update

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has revealed how husband Derek Draper is now well enough to exercise as she delivered a promising health update.

The mum-of-two spoke about her husband’s recovery from Covid-19 at the Who Cares Wins awards ceremony on Sunday night as she took to the stage to present the Best Nurse Award.

Derek, from Chorley, contracted coronavirus in March 2020 and spent more than a year in hospital as the deadly virus ravaged his body and major organs, leaving him unable to walk and talk properly.

The former political lobbyist has been receiving round-the-clock care since returning to his modified home earlier this year, however Long Covid means he can sleep up to 20 hours a day.

Kate, 54, paid tribute to the ‘utterly breath-taking’ work nurses do every day as she presented the Best Nurse Award before being asked by host Davina McCall how Derek was doing.

Davina asked: “Kate, I would love to ask on behalf of all of us, how is Derek doing?”

The Smooth Radio host replied: “He’s had a good day today, we did some exercises together before I came out.

“A day at a time, but today’s a good day. Thank you for asking, that’s really kind of you.”

Kate, who was also a judge for The Sun’s Who Cares Wins Awards, quickly went on to praise those working on the frontline throughout the pandemic.

She said: “I’m here to talk about nurses. I mean, where do you begin, there is absolutely no doubt that everything nurses do every day is utterly breath-taking.

“But sometimes it’s the little moments of thoughtfulness that make all the difference and it’s one of those that’s lead to tonight’s recipient being nominated.”

The winner of The Sun’s Who Cares Wins Award for Best Nurse was Jackie Brunton, a lead nurse in end of life and bereavement.

The Who Cares Wins Awards took place on Tuesday at London’s Roundhouse and was aired on Channel 4 last night (September 19).

It was attended by Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Duke of Cambridge as well as celebrities including Gary Lineker, Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster.
