Liverpool line-ups as Trent Alexander-Arnold decision made and Naby Keita chance vs Porto

Ian Doyle – Milner in for Trent as Konate plays again

No Trent, no problem?

We shall see. Anyway, Liverpool will have to do without their playmaking right-back for their Champions League match in Porto.

I’d be having James Milner as the replacement, not least because Neco Williams has just come back from a spell out through injury.

At left-back I’d go with Kostas Tsimikas, while in the centre of defence Virgil van Dijk can stay but this time be partnered by Ibrahima Konate. Alisson Becker is in goal.

The midfield more or less picks itself, with Fabinho and Jordan Henderson joined by one of Curtis Jones, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain or Naby Keita. Keita for me.

Up top, Sadio Mane wasn’t great at Brentford and he can make way for Diogo Jota shifting to the left, with Roberto Firmino back up top and Mohamed Salah on the right.

My team (4-3-3): Alisson; Milner, Konate, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Fabinho, Henderson, Keita; Salah, Fimino, Jota.

Paul Gorst – Jota and Gomez come in

The lack of Trent Alexander-Arnold in Porto this evening is a big blow.

But if the right-back has a chance to play in Sunday’s gigantic clash with Manchester City, then it is wise to leave him out of this Group B game.

The Reds miss so much when he is unavailable from an attacking sense, but James Milner has proven by his performance against Wilfried Zaha earlier this month that he can step in when called upon, defensively.

So he starts at right-back tonight alongside Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Andy Robertson.

In midfield, I’ll resist the urge to rest Fabinho and Jordan Henderson and keep them in alongside Naby Keita, who is back fit again after a painful foot injury sustained at Norwich.

Up top, it’s a watching brief for Sadio Mane, to begin with at least, with Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino entrusted to do the damage.

My team (4-3-3): Alisson; Milner, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Keita; Salah, Firmino, Jota.

Joe Rimmer – Kostas Tsimikas misses out after defensive changes

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury is a blow for Liverpool at just the wrong time.

Despite many overlooking Porto, this won’t be an easy game and it’s not exactly ideal for James Milner to play at right-back twice in a week.

In fact, I’d have been tempted to throw in Conor Bradley, such was the impression he made against Norwich.

But he’s not in the travelling party, so Milner it is.

I’d bring back Joe Gomez at centre-back alongside his old mate Virgil van Dijk, and although I was tempted by Kostas Tsimikas, I think that might be one change too many in the back four.

Naby Keita comes into my midfield with Fabinho and Henderson, and I’m also handing Roberto Firmino a start, with Sadio Mane dropping out.

My team (4-3-3): Alisson; Milner, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Keita; Salah, Firmino, Jota.
