Police funding should be tied to “basic values ​​of decency.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden said Monday night that federal assistance to police-based police must “bind their ability to meet some basic standards of decency and dignity.”

“I support the federal assistance to the police in conditioning, based on whether they meet some basic standards of decency and respect. And, indeed, they are able to demonstrate that they can protect the community and everyone in the community, ”he said.

Earlier Monday, Biden’s campaign said he supported the “urgent need for reform”, including public schools, summer programs, treatment of mental health and substance abuse, “so that officers could concentrate on policing.”

“This means funding community policing programs that improve relations between officers and residents and providing the trajectory that is needed to survive tragic, unjust deaths,” the statement said.

According to the statement, Biden said funding should be provided so that police departments can diversify “to create harmony with the communities in which they serve”.

Several cities, including New York, Los Angeles and Minneapolis, are considering reimbursing their police departments for youth and social services programs.

Protesters and members of Black Lives Matter have called on politicians to “return to the police” at a national rally following the May 25 killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers.
