Senate Democrats request FTC to investigate Tesla around ‘misleading’ Autopilot statements

Senate Democratic lawmakers known as Wednesday for the Federal Trade Commission to start a probe into Tesla’s “Autopilot” and “Comprehensive Self-Driving” devices, citing “major concerns” regarding what they described as the company’s “deceptive promoting” of their functions.

In a letter to FTC Chair Lina Khan, Sens. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Ed Markey of Massachusetts argued Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk have “persistently misrepresented” the abilities of its autos. The lawmakers say the company’s promises pose a probable danger to motorists.

“Tesla and Mr. Musk’s recurring overstatements of their vehicle’s abilities – even with distinct and recurrent warnings – exhibit a deeply regarding disregard for the protection of people on the highway and call for genuine accountability,” the senators wrote in the letter. “Their statements set Tesla drivers – and all of the touring community – at possibility of major injury or loss of life.”
