Trump has announced the end of US relations with the World Health Organization

“Since they have been requested and failed to make the much-needed reforms, we will close our relationship with the World Health Organization today and redirect these funds to other parts of the world and, urgently, to meet public health needs around the world,” Trump said.

“The world needs a response from China about the virus. We must have transparency,” the president said.

Earlier in the day, he said that China had not provided accurate information to the World Health Organization (WHO) about the coronavirus and that China had put pressure on the WHO to “confuse the world”.

“Chinese officials ignored the World Health Organization’s reporting obligations and put pressure on the World Health Organization to confuse the world when Chinese authorities first discovered the virus,” Trump said. “Countless lives have been taken and deep economic hardship has been caused around the world.”

The president had earlier announced a temporary suspension of funding to the WHO, and in a letter to the agency in early May said the United States would “permanently raise funds” if the WHO “does not promise major improvements in the next 30 days.”

This story is breaking and updating.
